Music Cities Network @ SXSW 2019

Currently the annual conglomerate of film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences - the SXSW - is taking place in Austin, Texas. The Music Cities Network is also participating and involved in the following events:

#1 Factor Nightlife: Global Music Cities & Night Time Economy @ German Haus
Wednesday, March 13th 2019 | 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Gain insights into how cities in Europe and the US work on policies and constantly prototype for how a more collaborative, sustainable and fair city could look like. The panels and roundtables will show that a clear strategic concept for the night time economy not only helps to develop creative communities such as the music and art scenes, but also attracts skilled workers and the innovative minds that fuel startup and tech industries. Curated by Gerrit Rössler (DWIH New York = Deutsche Wissenschafts- und Innovationshäuser) and Lutz Leichsenring (vibe.lab, Club Commission Berlin), in partnership with Music Cities Network & Sound Diplomacy.

Session 3: 4:45 - 5:30 pm | "Music culture as driver of city diversity – the city as a driver of diverse music scenes” Presentation CityScienceLab & Demonstration Music-CityScope Hamburg

The CityScienceLab is developing an interactive City Model to show and discuss the interdependencies between Music and the City. What influence does the dynamics of musical scenes have on the permanent transformation of material urban space? What influence has the city – seen as economic, demographic, structural and ecological structure – on the development of diverse musical scenes? Together with Sound Diplomacy, Hamburg Music and Clubkombinat the Music Cities Network is contributing data and experiences for the further development of the City Model.

#3 Panel: Passport to Music Cities: Music Tourism
Saturday, March 16th 2019 | 2:00 pm - 3.00 pm @ Convention Center, Room 15

There is no tourism product like it - 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year Music Cities produce events and maintain iconic sites that music fans will travel the world to see. But tapping into the power of music tourism is easier said than done. How do we put our Music Cities on the map for the globetrotting fan? How do we turn hapless visitors in our city into passionate audience members? And if you’re the one producing music events, how do you tap into local destination marketing plans to make sure music is spotlighted?
In this panel, European and North American experts will share insights on effective programs and audience development strategies, as well as how to work with your city partners to ensure music is part of the story.

Amongst the four panelists, two representatives of the MCN members Aarhus and Hamburg are taking part: Kate Becker (Seattle Office of Film + Music), Johannes Everke (Hamburg Marketing), John Fodge (Down the Drain Group, Aarhus/DK), Joey Hendrickson (Kalypso, Houston/USA).
